Carlos Manuel Correia dos Santos, born 15 January 1958 in Moita in the Setúbal district and known simply as Carlos Manuel, was a central midfielder who spent eight and a half seasons at Benfica. He made 318 competitive appearances for the club and scored 58 goals. The Portuguese sports daily Record later named him among the 100 best Portuguese players of all time.
He made his senior debut with G.D. CUF and moved to F.C. Barreirense in 1978 before reaching the Primeira Liga with Benfica. There he became an influential part of a side that won four league titles and six cups during the 1980s, and finished runners-up to Anderlecht in the 1982–83 UEFA Cup.
After falling out of favour with the club’s management he left for FC Sion in Switzerland in January 1988, returning to Lisbon five months later with Sporting CP. He later spent two years at Boavista and retired at the end of the 1993–94 season with Estoril Praia, aged 36, before taking up coaching.
Carlos Manuel won 42 caps for Portugal and scored eight goals across roughly six years. His debut came on 26 March 1980, a 1–4 defeat away to Scotland in qualifying for Euro 1980. He represented his country at one World Cup and one European Championship.
