Sami Hyypia

Sami Hyypia was the centre-back Liverpool built a defence around, and the vintage market has not kept pace with the reputation: search the stock behind this page and you will find a single Hyypia item.

The one Hyypia shirt in the catalogue

It is a 2001-03 Liverpool European shirt with Hyypia #4 on the back, graded 8/10, in XL, listed at around £180. “CL” in a listing like this means the Champions League kit rather than the domestic one — clubs of that era often ran a separate European shirt with different sponsor or badge rules, and those versions were made in far smaller numbers than the league shirt.

Why so few

Printed defender shirts were rarely bought new by fans, who chose the strikers instead. What survives in the second-hand trade is what people bought at the time, so years of consistent centre-half performances leave a much thinner trail than a single season of a popular forward.

Reading the grade

The 1-10 number is wear, not usability. An 8/10 on a shirt more than twenty years old means light fading or a small mark, not a flaw that stops you wearing it. Sizing is period sizing: an XL from 2001 is cut closer than a modern XL.
