Vancouver Whitecaps FC was founded on 18 March 2009 and began Major League Soccer play in 2011 as the league’s 17th club. It is a phoenix club: the Whitecaps name goes back to a 1974 North American Soccer League side and was revived in 2001 for a second-division team.
