Lothar Matthaus

Lothar Matthäus, born 21 March 1961, captained West Germany to the 1990 World Cup and took the Ballon d’Or that year. In 1991 he became the first winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award, and he remains the only German to have received it. He appeared at five World Cups — 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1998 — won Euro 1980, and retired as Germany’s most capped player with 150 appearances, 83 of them for West Germany, and 23 goals. He began at Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1979, joined Bayern Munich in 1984 and signed for Inter Milan in 1988.

Which part of his career the shirts cover

This is worth knowing before you search: the oldest item here is from 1988, and the newest from 2000. That means nothing survives from his five Mönchengladbach seasons, and his Inter Milan years are absent too. What is here splits between Bayern Munich and Germany, roughly two thirds club to one third country, all of it carrying the number 10. The 1990s dominate completely, with the 1994–96 and 1997–99 Bayern and Germany shirts appearing most often.

Reading the listings

Home and away versions are split about two to one in favour of home. Condition grades range from 5/10 to 10/10 with a typical item around 6/10, which for thirty-year-old shirts usually means visible fading or print loss rather than damage. Youth sizes turn up regularly alongside adult ones — several 13–16 year sizes are listed — so check the size line carefully rather than assuming an adult fit.
